It is not enough for an organisation to simply adopt specific modelling languages; it is also worth considering and documenting its own choices on how architecture is modelled. Standardised modelling languages are extensive, and few organisations need their entire scope: therefore, it is essential to agree on a subset of the modelling language and how it will be used. We call this type of guideline a Modelling Handbook.
The Modelling Handbook defines the content to be modelled as well as the visual presentation of the outputs. The handbook provides guidance on the following:
· Which modelling languages, elements, and relationships are used in the architecture
· What kinds of diagrams will be produced from the architecture content
· What the modelling approach should be (i.e., how concrete and detailed the content should be). It is helpful to illustrate this with real examples from your own organisation.
Coala’s Modelling Handbook outlines one possible modelling guide for creating enterprise and solution architecture diagrams. It explains what kind of content is depicted in the architecture and what the visual presentation of the diagrams should be (i.e., what kinds of boxes and lines are used). This ensures that architecture diagrams are consistent and more useful.
Why did we decide to create our own Modelling Handbook? After all, there are already plenty of modelling guides, standards, and recommendations available online. That’s true, but here are a few reasons why we took this approach.
At Coala, we prefer a modelling guide that is clear and simple, but still comprehensive enough to make the created content useful. If the modelling guide is so complex and theoretical that even the architect doesn’t understand it, you cannot expect to produce usable architecture content. And if there is too much content to model, or it is overly detailed, the content may not be maintainable. If practical examples are missing, you can be quite sure that the modelling guide will not be adopted.
We also value practicality. Our modelling guide is based on our experiences working on architecture in dozens of organisations. We know it works in most organisations. Of course, there is much to appreciate in notations and frameworks, which is why our modelling guide incorporates the best parts of ArchiMate®.
You can use the Modelling Handbook directly as a modelling guide, or develop your own organisational handbook based on it. The Modelling Handbook can include separate sections for enterprise architecture and solution architecture, as the content is of different types and levels of detail. Kokonaisarkkitehtuurin mallinnusväline ei ole yksin
Webinaarissa pohditaan miten kokonaisarkkitehtuuri on yksi organisaation sisäisistä toiminnosta, mutta samoja tietoja (kuten prosesseja ja tietojärjestelmiä) on monessa eri paikassa eri työvälineissä. Ratkaisu on hallita työkalut kokonaisuutena ja päättää missä ylläpidetään minkäkin tasoisia tietoja.
